Abstract:
In this doctoral thesis simulation, fabrication and characterization of optical ridge waveguides in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) and potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4, KTP) are discussed. The ridges are prepared by mechanical grinding using a dicing saw. It is shown that prepared surfaces have roughness of the order of 1-5nm (RMS) that allow for low propagation loss. In lithium niobate thin films (also termed lithium niobate on insulator, LNOI) 1cm long ridge waveguides with core cross section down to 1 × 2µm could be prepared that possess low attenuation of 1.2dB/cm. Waveguides in KTP were fabricated by combination of Rb/Ba exchange and ridge definition. A novel method is reported that enables ridge waveguide preparation in KTP substrates whose z-axis is lying in the surface plane. This hinders Rb/Ba ions from diffusion into the depth, since they are only mobile along the crystallographic z-axis, and hence increases the thermal stability of the waveguide. Further, results on periodic poling of Ti diffused ridge waveguides in lithium niobate are presented.
