If the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide should be separated from the flue gas of gas turbine power plants, it can be removed in a downstream flue gas scrubbing. The efficiency of these systems are depending on the carbon dioxide concentration. With flue gas recirculation, the carbon dioxide in the flue gas can be enriched. Another way to increase the carbon dioxide concentration is the oxyfuel process. To study the effects of flue gas recirculation and oxyfuel process on the operation of a gas turbine with two-stage combustion, numerical simulations of the thermodynamic cycle and the combustion process had been carried out. For further examination of the combustion process, experimental investigations of the combustion are shown in this work. The thermodynamic cycle was calculated with a self-developed simulation tool. First of all, a reference process for the operation of the gas turbine with air was adjusted to values from literature. On this basis fixed boundary conditions for the cycle were defined. Then the cycle was simulated under exhaust gas recirculation and oxyfuel conditions for different combustion oxygen ratios in the combustion chambers. For the experimental tests, a test stand with a generic gas turbine combustion chamber was set up. In this, combustion tests were conducted under flue gas recirculation conditions and with a nitrogen-free oxidizer consisting of carbon dioxide and oxygen to measure the exhaust gas composition and temperature. For the numerical investigation of the combustion, the flame speed and the ignition delay times for different oxygen concentrations were calculated with suitable software. The results show that the thermodynamic properties of the oxidizer are strongly influenced by the altered composition and this directly affects the thermodynamic states on which the the thermodynamic cycle is based. Thus, the oxyfuel operation led to a significantly lower pressure ratio and a higher temperature at the outlet of the gas turbine. Similarly, the performance of the gas turbine drops and it decreases the net efficiency. The results for the operation of the gas turbine under flue gas recirculation conditions have the same tendency, but are much less pronounced. Under flue gas recirculation conditions, the ratio of carbon dioxide in the exhaust gas increases significantly. Its concentration can almost be doubled to 12 Vol.-%. For the oxyfuel process, it has been shown that carbon dioxide concentrations of nearly 100 Vol.-% can be achieved theoretically. However, this would require pure oxygen, which is not available in practice for economic reasons. Therefore, it is also shown how the achievable carbon dioxide concentration depends on the oxygen purity.-
