Abstract:

Clusters are well established, real and precious forms of organization of collaboration within the globalized economic world and the network society. Clusters are attractive because they create an organized space for exchange and cooperation of actors in one region. These actors probably compete but their cooperation in challenges that can only or even better be achieved together offers relevant added value for the participants from business, science, public authorities and society. For a longer time, the research on regional clusters intensively dealt with the question whether clusters do exist and whether they should exist, which characteristics they (can or should) have, which forms they have and which role the public authority should play. Increasingly, the issue of an appropriate governance of these heterarchical systems gets focussed. A lot of aspects are still unanswered. This thesis analyses the role of a collective cluster identity for the coordination of cluster activities on the one hand and on the other hand the communication, elementary for constitution, development and marketing of clusters. The development of a cluster brand as a recursive visualization of a collective identity, supporting identification and as a value-adding marketing instrument is discussed using the theory of structuration and analysed with a concrete practical example.
