Abstract:

With the demand for realistic consumption and emission data, the use of transient engine tests is gaining importance. Transient experiments make it possible to do relevant application tasks and reliable forecasts early in the development process. However, the classical engine test and the following thermodynamic analysis as well as the simulation of the internal engine process are often based on stationary operating conditions. For the calculation of transient operating conditions, e.g. an acceleration process or a torque build-up, the results of such stationary experiments are often used. Even with fine rasterization of the stationary engine map data an uncertainty remains, because only a quasi-stationary analysis is possible by principle. Therefore, this work extends the established tool chain for analysis and simulation of the engine process to include transient models. Especially with spontaneous load requests, the actuators on the engine and particular parameters only take the required positions and values after a certain period of time. Thereby the stationary operating condition is set. Consequently, during a change of operating point, the operating conditions at the passed operating points are different from those in stationary operation. Repeated measurements as well as the synchronization of the test bench control and measuring equipment make it possible to generate transient operating points on the engine test bench, which represent the actual sequence of the passed operating points based on an average operating cycle. This allows to reproduce the transient system behavior of the investigated engine independently of cycle fluctuations and measurement uncertainties. Furthermore the differences between stationary and transient operating points can be indicated. With this procedure, a detailed understanding of the real processes in a vehicle operation is possible, and the previous error can be quantified by a simplified quasi-stationary method. Beside all the necessary adjustments of the test bench architecture and the thermodynamic analysis of transient operating points, a model for the determination of the combustion chamber wall temperature during transient operating phases is presented. In addition, detailed conformity analyses of characteristic operating parameters of stationary and transient operating points are carried out. In particular the differences in the residual exhaust gas content and excess-air factor show that the processes during the transient operating phases have an influence on the passed operating points that cannot be ignored. The level of deviations is linked to the operating dynamics. Conclusively the resulting influences on the engine process are discussed.
