The present study is concerned with the enhancement of the hybrid LES-URANS method of Jaffrezic und Breuer (FTC 81, 415-448, 2008) enabling simulations of complex turbulent flows based on eddy-resolving techniques. A main objective of this investigation is the improvement of the modeling of the turbulent dissipation rate, which is realized by taking the approach of Jakirlic und Jovanovic (JFM 656, 530-539, 2010) into account. This proper formulation divides the turbulent dissipation rate into a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous part. The latter part is considered by a factor within the calculation of the diffusion term. The homogeneous part is analytically expressed by a Taylor series expansion and depends on the homogeneous lateral Taylor microscale leading to a formulation which avoids any empirical constants. This approach leads to a significantly improved description of the near-wall URANS region. Moreover, the present study evaluates the influence of the employed inflow boundary conditions on eddy-resolving simulations. The generation of reasonable instantaneous inflow boundary conditions is realized by the digital filter concept by Klein et al. (J. Comp. Phys. 186, 652-665, 2003) and for the first time merged with this unique hybrid method. Furthermore, the application area of this hybrid method is extended to allow the simulation of external flows with laminar-turbulent transition. The existing switching procedure between the URANS and LES areas requires an additional criterion, which separates the laminar and turbulent regions. This goal is achieved by the TR switching criterion, where the detection of both flow states is based on the ratio between the subgrid-scale length scale and the Kolmogorov length scale. A further challenge for the simulations of external flows is the typically coarsely resolved inflow region. This circumstance results in a loss of information of the synthetically generated turbulent inflow data before reaching the region of interest. To prevent these problems, a source term formulation of the digital filter concept is introduced allowing to shift the superposition of the synthetic turbulent inflow data from the inlet to a well resolved region. The general application of the modeling approach of the turbulent dissipation rate, the extended synthetic turbulence inflow generator as well as the new source term formulation of the digital filter concept is extensively evaluated based on the plane channel flow. The subsequent analysis of the periodic hill flow increases the complexity of the investigated flow configurations. This test case includes a pressure-induced separation and hence requires a meaningful distribution of the URANS and LESmodes to deliver satisfying predictions of the flow. The evaluation of the hybrid simulations concentrates on the dependency of the results on the employed switching position and the grid resolution. Furthermore, a comparison between hybrid simulations applying periodic boundary conditions and synthetically generated inflow profiles is presented. Based on an additional comparison of predictions relying on time-independent and instantaneous inflow data, the importance of appropriate inflow boundary conditions is underlined. Similar to the investigations of the hybrid simulations applying periodic boundary conditions, the hybrid simulations applying synthetic inflow data are also examined with respect to the employed switching position and the grid resolution. Due to the missing homogeneous direction the two three-dimensional diffusers offer the most demanding internal flow investigated in this study. The analysis of the resulting flows shows that the hybrid simulations are able to deliver the correct position and shape of the recirculation areas along the walls. Furthermore, the influence of the employed model for the dissipation rate as well as the switching position are evaluated in detail. Finally, all extensions are used to perform hybrid simulations of the external flow around the SD7003 airfoil. In order to show the general applicability of the TR switching procedure for external flows with transition, hybrid simulations without any turbulence intensity are performed. Afterwards, the new source term formulation is used to allow a meaningful comparison between numerical predictions and experimental measurements. Based on the source term formulation it is very easy to vary the inflow boundary conditions and thus the oncoming turbulence intensity. In this way, the observed high sensitivity of the position and shape of the laminar separation bubble regarding the turbulence intensity found in the experiments can be explicitly reproduced by numerical simulations with different turbulence intensities.-
