Abstract:

Driven by today’s climate change policy and ever increasing demands of emission guidelines as well as the finite nature of the fossil fuel supply, the development of fuel flexible gas turbines has taken on a greater importance in the last years. Not only does the combustion of alternative gaseous fuels have a neutral CO2 balance, but further it permits an operation with lower pollutant emissions in comparison to the combustion of fossil fuels. Another possibility of reducing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions is the sequestration of CO2 from the exhaust gas volume stream in combination with the operation under flue gas recirculation conditions. Up until now, this latter operational mode has been primarily implemented in fossil fuel fired power plants. Due to the recirculation of the exhaust gases, the CO2 content of the resulting exhaust gases is increased. Furthermore, the volume flow of the exhaust gases that are to be treated in the CO2 sequestration plant is decreased. As a result, the size of these plants can be reduced resulting in lower investment and operational costs. Additionally, the operation with a CO2 enriched oxidizer has a beneficial effect on the nitric oxide emissions. Both of these above mentioned operational modes have a direct impact on the combustion characteristics, that has only been studied separately up until now. This dissertation focuses on the investigation of the combined effect of variable fuel gas and oxidizer compositions on the stability and emission characteristics of a fuel flexible generic gas turbine combustor. In a first step, a parameter study of reaction kinetics is performed to identify the basic underlying mechanisms which are responsible for the change in combustion characteristics when switching from natural gas to alternative fuel gases. The main part of this thesis concentrates on the experimental investigation of a swirl stabilized, partially premixed gas turbine combustion chamber. The stability and emission characteristics of this combustion chamber under flue gas recirculation conditions are investigated for the fossil reference fuel natural gas as well as for low and mid calorific regenerative fuel gases. The influence on the operational characteristics are established at full and partial load. Furthermore, the mixing behavior of the burner is altered via the use of variable burner nozzles in order to determine the influence of the inhomogeneity of the air-gas mixture on the goal parameters. The results of the above mentioned investigations lead to an optimized operational strategy for a fuel flexible gas turbine combustion chamber. This strategy offers a broad range of operational stability in fresh air operation with the drawback of heightened nitric oxide emissions. By switching to flue gas recirculation operation, the nitric oxide emissions can then be reduced. Finally, an attempt to numerically estimate the experimentally investigated boundaries of the operational field with the alternative fuel gases under flue gas recirculation conditions by using a perfectly stirred reactor with a reference dataset for natural gas is undertaken. The investigation shows, that the boundaries of the operational field for all alternative fuel gases can be determined within a tolerance limit of ±10% for the partially premixed combustor.
