The core of the work is the methodology for site-specific design and implementation of VAWT. Here, optimization approaches are incorporated that increase their potential annual yield. Through a combination of efficiency and yield increase, site-optimized systems can be realized, which can also be manufactured economically in "one" quantities. For the experimental investigation, a wind tunnel will be designed and set up within the framework of the doctorate to measure the developed prototypes. From the findings of the CFD simulations and the experimental investigations of a reference plant it becomes clear that optimization measures have to be considered on different levels (detail, plant and system level). In order to evaluate the various approaches to flow-influencing measures at the detailed level, the previously verified CFD simulation models are examined with regard to possible improvements and optimized in terms of their characteristics by incorporating various turbulence models. For this purpose, four approches for increasing efficiency and yield are considered on a reference profile. The investigation and measurement of the specimens verifies the results of the CFD simulations carried out. In addition to the pure verification via data, a visual comparison of the results is carried out. A flow visualization method based on Schlieren photography with an image processing approach in the Background Oriented Schlieren method is used. On the turbine level, optimizations in the field of rotor geometry, rotor structure as well as rotor aerodynamics are target-oriented. With the help of the VAWT_Power software tool, the VAWT rotor geometry is modified and various parameter studies are performed. These include the rotor shape, the torsion of the rotor and the rotor solidity. In addition to an efficiency optimization (operating point), a corresponding yield optimization (operating range) can also be achieved by adjusting the power characteristic curve. In the implementation of this geometry, further optimization takes place with regard to the use of materials and the mechanical load capacity (rotor structure). Lightweight construction approaches with bionic structures and approaches of hybrid materials form the basis for this. In combination with fiber-reinforced plastics, a resource-efficient rotor blade is constructed through optimized material use. The investigations on the system level are carried out by LES calculations. The focus of the investigations is on the vortex development on the rotor blade, the vortex development on the connections and the wake flow that forms. The experimental data obtained are used to verify the models. Based on the investigations of these three levels, a new concept for a site-optimized VAWT is developed.-
