Abstract
This article looks at a rationing, a particular aspect of life during the Second World War, and explains its effects on the French countryside. As a synthesis of the major works on the subject, it enables us to approach the history of the French countryside during this war from a perspective of everyday life, “at ground level”. The article looks at the introduction of the first rationing measures in the first year of the war, and the effects of inadequate rations on urban populations and then looks at the various ways in which the French went around the “Ravitaillement général”, especially in developing clandestine channels, in which rural people played a major role. Finally, it analyzes Vichy’s relationship with the peasantry, the failure of its food supply policy, and the continuation of rationing measures despite the end of the war and of Nazi occupation.
