Abstract
In order to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals, the construction industry needs to change its current concrete compositions to eco‐friendlier solutions with a much lower carbon footprint. One option is to further increase the use of supplementary cementitious materials as clinker substitution or develop innovative cement and concrete solutions. For innovative concrete solutions, the prevailing prescriptive approach for durability design is inadequate, calling for performance‐based specifications. Sustainability targets can only be met if both the required service life and a low global warming potential footprint are achieved simultaneously. This includes an optimization process with several variables such as binder type, concrete composition, and structural design. This investigation introduces a framework aimed at identifying the most durable and sustainable concrete solutions for structures exposed to chlorides. The impact of binder type, concrete mix‐design parameters, and cover depth on both service life and global warming potential are examined meticulously for an extensive range of concrete solutions. Graphical representations are presented to facilitate comprehensive understanding, enabling readers to discern the effects of various parameters and identify optimal solutions with ease for their individual applications. The proposed methodology facilitates the future use of performance‐based concepts for the selection of eco‐friendly concretes to build sustainable and durable structures.
