Abstract
Relationships between Erasmus+ students and residents of the host country are a decisive component in developing skills and knowledge during the stay abroad. erefore, we developed theoretically based policies to strengthen those relationships and prevent negative influence on relationship-building. The suggested policies focus specifically on the role of Erasmus+ students in relationship-building and are based on a model that tests the influence and interactions of the following variables: importance of cultural identity, strength of stereotypical view on residents of the host country, attitude towards cultural differences, and language knowledge on the quality and quantity of relationships. Furthermore, we asked Erasmus+ students directly about their relationships with residents, potential reasons for the relationships’ nature, and ideas to influence them. Data was collected via an online questionnaire distributed among Erasmus+ students in Göttingen, Germany. We found that the strength and content of stereotypes towards residents, the attitude towards c ultural differences, hindering aspects for intergroup communication, and existing social networks influence the relationships between Erasmus+ students and residents critically. Further research is necessary to empirically test the effectiveness of the proposed policies.
