    Challenges in Automated Commercial Aircraft Production

    Civil Aircraft development and production are facing significant challenges in future. On the one hand, the flight-path to carbon neutral aviation, like using liquid hydrogen, will require game changing technologies. Simultaneously, competition, especially on the single aisle market, is evolving fast and puts pressure on market shares and margins. The necessity of an adaptable and highly efficient production becomes more evident than ever. One contribution to achieve this goal is the research project “Intelligent Modular Robotics and Integrated Production System Design for Aircraft Manufacturing” (iMOD). Namely, it will analyze challenges regarding (1) an integrated and Digital Twin-based system design approach, (2) flexible and modular robotics to support workers with unergonomic tasks and (3) a flexible intralogistics based on Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Those three aspects will be integrated into an approach that uses semantic technologies to connect the different components across different levels of functionality and different life cycle phases.

    On agent-based decentralized and integrated scheduling for small-scale manufacturing

    © 2020 Gehlhoff and Fay. Small-scale manufacturing often relies on flexible production systems that can cope with frequent changes of products and equipment. Transports are a significant part of the production flow, especially in the domain of large and heavy workpieces that requires explicit planning to avoid unnecessary delays. This contribution takes a detailed look at how to create feasible integrated schedules within a decentralised or even heterarchical architecture and which information the agents have to exchange. These schedules incorporate constraints such as the blocking-constraint. They also consider dynamic setup and operation durations while finding a good-enough solution. The proposed agent-based solution applies to a wide variety of scheduling problems and reveals positive properties in terms of scalability and reconfigurability.

    Agent-based decentralised architecture for multi-stage and integrated scheduling
    Traditional centrally controlled production and logistics systems of mass production exhibit difficulties to cope with the new reality of frequent changes in manufacturing technology and product design. Agent-based decentralized decision-making can be a means to cope with the complex nature of modern manufacturing systems. This contribution proposes an agent architecture to integrate production and transportation scheduling and process planning. It also incorporates shared resources, such as operators, into the process, which further improves the solution. To be suitable for quick rescheduling, the approach includes an efficient underlying communication protocol. The integrated scheduling of overhead cranes serves as an application example and illustration of the approach. The runtime efficiency of the algorithm makes it suitable for practical applications within manufacturing systems.

    Dezentrales Scheduling für dynamische Systeme – Ein agentenbasierter Ansatz zur integrierten Feinplanung

    Die Koordination komplexer Produktions- und Logistiksysteme ist Gegenstand intensiver Forschung. Gerade im Bereich transportintensiver Kleinserienfertigung sollte zudem ein integrierter Ansatz verfolgt werden, der die Abhängigkeiten zwischen Produktions- und Transportressourcen ausreichend detailliert berücksichtigt. Ein solcher integrierter Ansatz auf Basis von Software-Agenten wird in diesem Beitrag beschrieben. Dabei wird u.a. darauf eingegangen, welche Informationen zur Koordination ausgetauscht werden müssen und wie die Informationen modelliert werden müssen, damit mögliche Fertigungsreihenfolgen ermittelt werden können. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Beitrags ist die Anbindung an und die Interaktion mit weiteren innerbetrieblichen Software-Systemen.
